APPRENTICESHIP
PROGRAM
The Alberta Ironworkers Apprenticeship and Training Plan is responsible for the administration of all apprenticeship matters in Alberta relating to our Union Ironworkers and Welders. This plan looks after both Local 725 (Calgary) and Local 720 (Edmonton).
Courses Available
WHMIS:
WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a Canada wide system developed to make it easy for you the worker to find out about materials in your workplace that could injure you or be bad for your health. The WHMIS course explains how to use the WHIMIS system and the responsibilities of the employers, workers and the suppliers of controlled substances in the workplace.
Length: 3 hours

CSTS:
CSTS stands for Construction Safety Training System. The CSTS was developed by the Alberta Construction Safety Association and covers various health and safety topics including WHMIS, tool safety, scaffolds etc … The CSTS is done individually on one of our computers at your own pace. There are 12 lessons, each lesson followed by a quiz. Ticket does not expire.
Length: 2 - 5 hours
Maximum Class Size: 2 at a time

St. John Ambulance First Aid
Emergency First Aid:
Learn to recognize and provide intervention for life-threatening emergencies until medical aid arrives.
Topics include:

Emergency Scene Management
-
Choking
-
Shock and unconsciousness
-
Severe bleeding and
-
One and two rescuer CPR for an adult casualty
Emergency First Aid includes the above hands-on lessons as well as a written exam. Ticket is valid for 3 years.

Fall Protection:
The OSSA certified Fall Protection course was developed by the Alberta Locals 725 & 720. The course includes OH & S standards and regulations, fall arrest and fall restraint systems, selection and set up of appropriate systems and rescue. Most of the course is classroom but you will be asked to put on a harness, fit it properly and hang in it. Ticket is valid for 3 years.

Aerial Work Platform Safety Training:
The Aerial Platform training course was developed with Leavitt Safety Training for any persons operating an aerial work platform in the work place. The course includes proper conduct of a walk around inspection, functional checks from the ground and the platform, protective equipment and operation of the aerial platform. The course is half classroom, half hands-on. Ticket is valid 3 years.
Length: 8 hours, can be done in one day or 2 nights

Advanced Rigging
This course is tailored to the Journeyman Ironworker looking to improve their theory, skills and safety awareness in Advanced Rigging. This course will consist of the following topics:
